Air Bearing Developments Ltd was formed in June 2020, recruiting world-class engineers, to design and manufacture world class air bearings in the UK.
With expertise in rotary precision motion, The A.B. Dev team seized the opportunity to manufacture and develop advanced air bearing spindles, in the fields of semi-conductors, optics and automotive.
A.B. Dev is currently shipping high-precision spindles to markets in Europe, the U.S.A. and Asia.
DICING
“Semiconductor dicing requires high speed, accurate rotation
with minimal vibration to achieve technology-demanded cut quality. ABD ensures
high precision air-bearing spindles are designed and manufactured to exacting
standards.”
“ABD dicing spindles are equipped with direct drive brushless DC motors, with Hall Effect commutation available as required, thus providing low cogging and excellent speed stability.
High speed and high stiffness facilitate industry-leading dicing cutting performance, with a range of customisable hubbed and hubless wheelmounts available with minimal runouts.
Cost of ownership is kept low by reduced bearing CDA consumption, low friction bearings, and high efficiency motors.”
GRINDING
“Semiconductor grinding requires ultra-high stiffness, accurate
rotation with minimal vibration to achieve the required wafer attributes of minimal
TTV (Total Thickness Variation) and sub-surface damage. ABD has experience in
designing both precision grinding and chuck, air-bearing spindles.”
ABD grinding spindles are equipped with both direct drive brushless DC and AC motors, with Hall Effect commutation available as required, thus providing low cogging and excellent speed stability.
High stiffness (both axial and radial) is important and achieved along with minimal synchronous axial weave.
Through-shaft vacuum for chuck spindles and coolant for grinding spindles can be incorporated
“A typical atomiser spindle is turbine driven to speeds of up to ~100krpm, so the coating (normally paint) can be electrostatically deposited onto a surface. Robotic systems are common in the automotive world, facilitated by the low spindle mass and compact form factor. ABD has a range of different products to suit different applications.”

“Typically, the headstocks of all ophthalmic lathes utilises an aerostatic air bearing spindle to ensure the utmost accuracy for multi-curve aspherical contact lenses and intraocular lenses. Multi-pole brushless DC motors and high line-count encoders ensure minimal error motion is produced, resulting in superior lens moulds and lenses.”
